Why Would I Need A Medicare Agent?
Updated: Nov 9, 2022

Why is Medicare so confusing? How can you filter through all of the information? How can you be sure you are receiving the best plans that fit your needs? Should you block out the noise and stick with what you have, what seems to be working?
That all depends.
Medicare is confusing, but it does not have to be. You did your part, and you have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. You may even have Medigap (A Supplement) and a Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan. Or you have Medicaid and Original Medicare. Or just Original Medicare.
You think everything is good, but then you see those commercials. You get those phone calls. You throw out more of that mail. Then you hear that little voice that says, “maybe I should look into it. Or at least find out more information”. How do you even start? How would you even know who to trust?
First, you need to filter through all of the information and get to what exactly you need precisely. Then, ask yourself the following questions:
Has my premium increased too much?
Do I need Dental Coverage?
Do I need Hearing Aids?
Has my financial situation changed?
Do I need Vision Coverage?
Do I have to continue to pay my Part B Premium?
Do I qualify for Extra Help or Medicaid?
Do I need durable medical equipment?
How can I pay for a Nursing Home if required?
What do I do if I have cancer?
Can I get help with groceries?
Can I get rides to Doctor Appointments?
Do I have to pay a monthly Premium?
How can I get help with my Diabetes?
I cannot afford my medication. What are my options?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you could benefit from the help of a dedicated Medicare Agent and a Medicare Benefits Review. Here is what you need to know when looking for some help.
First, any person who claims to be a Medicare Agent/Advisor/Broker or otherwise would never charge for their service. Any person offering Medicare Services needs to be licensed by the state. They must provide a license number, and if you are in doubt, you can check with your State’s Insurance Department to verify their number.
A Medicare Agent cannot show up to your home unannounced without an appointment.
How are appointments made?
Response to an advertisement either online or by USPS by filling out a Request for Information form
Accepting an appointment over the phone
Setting up an appointment date from a Formal/Informal Sales Event or an Educational Event
Please keep in mind that if you call the 800 numbers or an ad from TV, there is a good chance the Agent on the other end of the line can only provide plans from one Carrier (Insurer), and this means you may not get what you need or are entitled to.
A step in the right direction would be to set up an in-person appointment for a review.
A good Medicare Insurance Agent is not bound by one Carrier (Insurer). Instead, they can compare multiple plans by multiple Carriers (Insurers) to make sure they are providing the best plan suited to your needs.
The Agent needs to go over your current Medicare coverage. They should ask if you have Original Medicare (Parts A & B), Medicare + Medicaid, Medigap/Supplement, Prescription Drug Coverage, or Medicare Advantage Plan. They should ask what you like or do not like about your current coverage, what you are looking for, and what needs you think you may have.
The Agent needs to check for all Doctors, Hospitals, and preferred Pharmacies in Network. There is no reason to change anything unless you want to. The Agent MUST also go over every prescription and check the formularies to make sure they can either beat the cost or stay the same.
They need to be able to provide you with a couple of options and only change your existing plan if it is to your benefit and at the right time to make the change. Overall they should leave you with peace of mind that they are providing you with the best plan, no question.
